Kunstkamp 2024: I want to live in the country (and other romances)

Special program

On May 24, 25 & 26, Kunsthuis SYB and VHDG will organize a weekend with workshops and talks at Het Lage Noorden, close to the Waddenzee, with the support of Keunstwurk and Netwerk Cultuur & Natuur.

The three-day program embraces the landscape as a stage for artistic and curatorial practices. Artists and curators are invited to apply and take part in this collective learning on the intersection of art and nature.

In 1976 the renowned performance and video artist Joan Jonas created the influential work ‘I want to live in the country (and other romances)’. In it, she juxtaposes the location of the artist studio and scenes from the rural area of Nova Scotia. The film forms a common thread for the Kunstkamp program by addressing artistic and curatorial experiences of rural landscapes.

Living in the countryside in the Netherlands and particularly in Fryslân, is a complex affair for artists and curators these days. While nature continues to appeal to artists and draw them in, the actual experience of living or working in the countryside often remains only on a note of personal romance. It’s something to dream of, while the city sounds and mutter are entering the studio from the busy streets.

At Het Lage Noorden, in close proximity to the sea, the organizational team invites participants to leave their studios and interact with the landscape of Fryslân.

The program consists of workshops, screenings and talks with curators and artists, such as Louwrien Wijers, Giulia Damiani, Hans den Hartog Jager, Jurga Daubaraitė and Jonas Žukauskas (Neringa Forest Architecture), Cocky Eek, Navid Nuur and Milena Bonilla. The full program will be announced in the coming weeks.
