Video work Jort van der Laan, developed at SYB, acquired by Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has recently announced that it has acquired a number of artworks from eight contemporary artists. Their works are on view now, in the exhibition Freedom of Movement. Stedelijk Museum also purchased the video work Neither of Us is Powerless by Jort van der Laan, and Kunsthuis SYB is proud to have contributed to the production phase of this artwork. Freedom of Movement is on view for one more week (until the 17th of March) at the Stedelijk Museum.

A Piece of Blue Velvet Hanging
Jort van der Laan developed the video work Neither of Us is Powerless during a residency period at Kunsthuis SYB. It was shown during a short presentation, titled A Piece of Blue Velvet Hanging in October 2018 at SYB. Van der Laan’s residency took place in the context of a two-part exchange of Ben Cain and Jort van der Laan between Kunsthuis SYB and King’s College Center for Philosophy and Visual Arts. Celine Mathieu wrote a contemplative text about this residency and exhibition.

Municipal Art Acquisitions 2019
The Stedelijk Museum organizes an exhibition every two years around their Municipal Art Acquisitions. The exhibitions contains new and/or recent works by artists living in the Netherlands. In addition to the work of Jort van der Laan, the museum also acquired works by Yael Bartana, Verena Blok, Kate Cooper, Danielle Dean, Deniz Eroglu, Basir Mahmood and Michele Rizzo.
