An Ye Zhi de Jong, still from “Home,” 2025.

An Ye Zhi de Jong

Syb is happy to host An Ye Zhi de Jong within the Artist-in-Space program. From November 10 - 23th, 2025, she works at Syb on the film footage she shot in China this past spring. The artist relates the footage to childhood films of her in China, and the many discoveries she made being back in China.

An Ye Zhi de Jong (Fenyi, 2001) is a Chinese born artist who grew up and lives in the Netherlands. In her work she explores the realities of growing up as a transracial Asian adoptee in a predominantly white environment. She questions the ethics of intercountry adoption and disputes the colonial motives and assumptions that were being broadly promoted in the past, and still frame the perspective on adoption and adoptees today. With her work she also delves into the complex relation to her roots and the loss of her origin and heritage, floating in the space between her homeland and her birth country. An Ye Zhi is an interdisciplinary artist who often works with sculpture and installations, her works offer reflections on the complexity of racial identity, origin and belonging

An Ye Zhi de Jong finished her bachelor’s degree in Autonomic Fine Art at Academy Minerva, Groningen, in June 2024. Her graduation work was nominated for multiple prizes. The year after the academy An Ye Zhi went on to exhibit at Dutch Design Week and several other art spaces throughout the Netherlands. She too won the Horizon Stipend as part of the Groninger Visual Arts Stipends.

The Horizon Stipend has a primary international focus, but also encourages collaborations with the Noordenaars. For her project An Ye Zhi traveled to China (April - June 2025) in search of lost parts of her story, and that of many others. She went looking for an accurate representation of the country she has so many ties to yet knows so little about, questioning the possibility of reconnection.
