Residency

Winnie Herbstein

Kunsthuis Syb welcomes artist Winnie Herbstein to Beetsterzwaag! From May 19, 2025, Herbstein begins the first phase of her research residency for the project Domestic Acts: Fills the room like sea slit back. The residency will culminate in an exhibition taking place in two different places at Kunsthuis SYB and Casco Art Institute in Utrecht in 2026.

Herbstein’s research explores alternative models of housing and communal living, focusing on how people resist dominant structures around property and domestic life. In Friesland, she will delve into local archives to investigate historical approaches to communal living from a more rural perspective, and connect with residents who have experience living in and organising alternative housing projects in South East Friesland.

Winnie Herbstein (1989, London) is an artist and filmmaker. Herbstein studied construction and is a founding member of Slaghammers, a women, trans and non-binary metal workshop based in Glasgow. She is a current fellow at Framer Framed and the University of Amsterdam and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (2021-2023). Her work has been exhibited, amongst others, at Arcadia Missa, London, Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow and Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund.
